Understanding Catholic Funerals
The rituals of the Catholic Church celebrating death and entry into eternal life are found in the Order of Christian Funerals (OCF).
The Catholic funeral ritual is structured to provide three occasions for communal prayer spaced over several days to replicate the journey from grief to healing.
In these ritual prayers, we are called to celebrate our faith in Christ, express our love for the person who has died and define new ways in which to remain faithful to the personal relationship that has touched our life.
The three elements of the Order of Christian Funerals are the Vigil (the wake service), the Funeral Mass with the body present, and the Committal. In each gathering, the bereaved accompany the deceased.
Those who journeyed with their beloved in life now escort him or her to the final resting place to await the Lord’s final call to eternal life.

Los rituales de la Iglesia Católica que celebran la muerte y la entrada a la vida eterna se encuentran en la Orden de Funerales Cristianos (OCF). El ritual funerario católico está estructurado para brindar tres ocasiones de oración comunitaria espaciadas durante varios días para reproducir el viaje del dolor a la curación.
En estas oraciones rituales, estamos llamados a celebrar nuestra fe en Cristo, expresar nuestro amor por la persona que ha muerto y definir nuevas formas de permanecer fieles a la relación personal que ha tocado nuestra vida.
Los tres elementos de la Orden de los Funerales Cristianos son la Vigilia (servicio de velatorio), la Misa fúnebre con el cuerpo presente y el Compromiso. En cada reunión, los deudos acompañan al difunto.
Aquellos que viajaron con su amado en la vida ahora lo acompañan al lugar de descanso final para esperar el llamado final del Señor a la vida eterna.
“Continuing the Journey” is a planning guide written to accompany the Order of Christian Funerals. It is a valuable resource for the funeral, whether the death was unexpected or planned for in advance.
The information contained in this booklet comes from many sources. It is designed to ease this time of loss and transition. It carefully takes the person through the journey of preparing a Catholic funeral and the rituals involved. The booklet also contains forms to record his or her wishes while going through the planning process.
“Continuing the Journey” is a tool for pastoral staff, lectors, musicians, funeral directors, cemeterians, and bereavement counselors. It assists the many families who are either pre-planning their own arrangements or those of their loved ones.
“Continuing the Journey” allows those who are grieving, as well as those who are assisting them, to appreciate the funeral as a journey taken with the family and parish community.
The booklet has been designed to ensure that the practical details connected with planning a funeral are explained in a way that helps all involved make the funeral a fitting celebration of the special meaning of the deceased person’s life.
